Devlog 2: A New Milestone!
It's damn been long, but I am back
It has been more than a year since I sketched the first piece of my game. So much has happened in my life in that short span of time: ups, downs, you name them. One thing is for certain, not once have I given up on this idea. It's certainly not my next game, but it will be the game I want to play. I cannot describe how good this feels. All this time, yes, I may not have touched the code for a while, or maybe I didn't even glance at the project for some time, but each time I had an idea, I wrote it down, even the simplest, most minute details. And here I am with my procedural generation tool.
And today, I finally get to test fly my sketch from more than a year ago. Working on this project has helped me really understand that while execution is crucial, what is even more crucial is the research, the documentation and the specification of the thing you want to make, a deeper understanding than you would have initially expected.
I am sure many are in the same train of thought as me. We want to be masters at something right off the bat, we want to be on equal terms with others at something they have been doing for decades. But understanding that things take time is hard for us. It doesn't matter that we know the truth, we still want to believe that we can be on equal or better terms. We force ourselves to think differently, and for us to keep marching on, learning new things, we usually have to get accustomed to it: start by forcing yourself to do it. After some time you see positive results, and from there it is a chain reaction towards your goal... usually.
I had to rework this tool twice before I could actually see the results I wanted to see, and I am very much pleased with the progress. By no means am I done, there is still so much I need to do. So many aspects of nature are left unimplemented, for many reasons, but slowly and steadily I will get there. The process was less tricky than I had thought; two respecifications is honestly lower than usual.
It's taking me four respecifications on the clouds part now, and only now have I gotten to about 25 to 30 percent of the quality I want from the clouds.
It's not easy, there is so much work to do. But I will share progress over time. It has been a long time, but we are still pushing.
Third entry. Where are we going?
